On June 6, 2009, a gathering of representatives of human rights organizations, advocate groups, various churches, and concerned individuals was held in Washington, DC. This gathering, called Emergency Human Rights Summit on the Philippines, was organized to build upon the strong but relatively dispersed response of US-based communities of faith, human rights and labor advocates, and members of the Filipino community to the human rights crisis in the Philippines. It provided these various groups the opportunity to have conversations and to share about their work and analysis on human rights in the Philippines. Bishop Valentin Lorejo of St. James' Parish, Philippine Independent Church, Chicago, attended this summit.
